Sir Bernard came into our lives during one of the most heartbreaking times our family had ever experienced. In January 2019, our beloved Sugar Punkin crossed the Rainbow Bridge, leaving an enormous emptiness in our hearts and home. Only one week later, we learned about a three-year-old English Bulldog named Bernard who was available for adoption through the Humane Animal Rescue and Trapping Team, also known as HARTT, in Phoenix, Arizona.

We were not trying to replace Sugar Punkin, because no dog ever could. Bernard was nothing like her, and it did not take long for us to realize that he was truly his own little character.

Sugar Punkin had been naturally affectionate and loved being close to us. Bernard seemed like her complete opposite. He was not a cuddler, did not like being held, and would not sit beside us on the couch or in a chair. No matter how many times we tried, he had absolutely no interest in sleeping in the bed with us. He preferred having his own space and doing things on his own terms.

We often wondered whether Bernard’s behavior came from a difficult puppyhood before he was rescued. He sometimes seemed guarded, and his serious expression made him look like a grumpy old man long before he actually became one. Even so, beneath that gruff bulldog exterior was an incredibly sweet dog who wanted love in his own special way.

Bernard may not have wanted to cuddle, but he always seemed to want someone’s hands on him. He loved being petted, rubbed, scratched, and touched. His favorite form of affection was undoubtedly a good butt scratch. He became an expert at quietly backing up toward people and positioning himself exactly where he needed to be. Before long, almost everyone he met found themselves scratching his backside while Bernard stood there contentedly, knowing his plan had worked.

That was how Bernard pulled people into his web of love. He did not climb into laps or smother anyone with kisses. Instead, he won people over with his wrinkled face, funny little underbite, expressive side-eye, stubborn personality, and his irresistible demands for attention. Friends, relatives, neighbors, and strangers quickly learned that Bernard was sweet, lovable, and impossible to forget.

Like Sugar Punkin, Bernard loved going to Petco for his baths and grooming appointments. He seemed to enjoy the attention and pampering, although he was definitely not a fan of the blow dryer. He also loved going for car rides and was happiest when he could stretch out and relax in the warm sunshine.

Bernard brought laughter, companionship, comfort, and unconditional love into our lives. He arrived when our hearts were broken and helped us begin to heal—not by replacing Sugar Punkin, but by showing us a completely different kind of love.

Adopting Sir Bernard from HARTT was one of the best decisions we ever made. He may not have been a traditional cuddly dog, but he loved deeply in his own way. Our sweet, lovable, grumpy old man left an unforgettable mark on everyone he met, and his web of love will remain wrapped around our hearts forever.
