Meet Sugar, our Founding Pet
Sugar’s Story
Some dogs simply become part of the family. Others become part of your soul. Sugar was one of those rare dogs whose love was so pure and unconditional that everyone who met her walked away with a smile.
Sugar’s journey with the Gatlin family began in an unexpected way. She first came from the neighbors next door, but from the very moment she walked through our front door, she was home. She wasn’t “the neighbor’s dog” anymore—she was a Gatlin. Somehow, she seemed to know it too.
As we all got to know her, it became clear that Sugar hadn’t always known kindness. There were signs that her puppy years had been difficult, and she carried the quiet reminders of a rough start to life. But that chapter ended the day she became part of the family. From then on, Sugar would never have to wonder where she belonged or whether she was loved. She was spoiled, cherished, and treated like the precious family member she was. She quickly settled into her new life, and before long she had everyone wrapped around her paw.
At nearly 80 pounds, Sugar had the powerful build of a pit bull, but she had the heart of a teddy bear. She loved every person she met and believed everyone should be her friend. Visitors who hadn’t met her before were often startled when they saw a big dog running toward them at full speed. For just a moment, there was uncertainty. Then they would notice her enormous grin, her bright eyes, and the tail wagging so hard it seemed her whole body was dancing. Within seconds, nervous strangers became laughing friends, and Sugar had won another heart.
One of her favorite places was by the side gate of our yard. She could spend hours watching the neighborhood go by. Every passing car, every person taking a walk, every child riding a bicycle was worth watching. She waited hopefully, wishing someone would stop just to say hello. Whenever someone did, it made her entire day. She greeted everyone with excitement, convinced that every new face was simply another opportunity to share a little happiness.
Sugar had an incredible way of making people feel welcome. She never judged anyone. She didn’t care where you came from, what kind of day you were having, or what you looked like. If you stopped to pet her, you instantly became her friend. Her love was freely given and never expected anything in return. She reminded us every day that kindness doesn’t have to be complicated. Sometimes it’s simply a wagging tail, a gentle nudge, or sitting quietly beside someone who needs comfort.
Life with Sugar was filled with little moments that became our favorite memories. Whether she was stretched out comfortably in sun, excitedly waited for a treat, watching the neighborhood from her gate, or greeted us with excitement every time someone came home, she had a way of making ordinary days feel special. Home simply felt happier because she was there.
Nothing prepares you for the day you hear that your best friend is seriously ill. Learning that Sugar had
