Zuzu came home alongside her sister, Bailey. They were littermates, the only girls, but from the very beginning they couldn’t have looked more different. Zuzu was the first puppy born and was more than twice the size of Bailey, who was the tiny runt of the litter. Despite their differences, they were inseparable from the moment they entered our lives.

Their names came from one of our favorite classic movies, It’s a Wonderful Life. The youngest daughter in the film, Zuzu Bailey, who so cherished and cared for her rose petals, so it seemed only fitting that our two little girls would carry those names together. It was a perfect choice because, just like in the movie, they brought joy, warmth, and love into our home every single day.

Zuzu quickly earned another name of her own—“La Vaca,” which means “the cow.” It wasn’t because she acted like one, but because of her size and her beautiful black-and-white coloring that reminded everyone of a dairy cow. The nickname fit her perfectly, and before long, everyone who knew her smiled whenever they heard it. It became another way of expressing just how special she was.

Although she was the larger sister, Zuzu never used her size to intimidate. Instead, she became Bailey’s protector. She watched over her little sister with a quiet devotion that only siblings seem to understand. Whether they were playing in the yard, exploring together, or simply resting nearby, Zuzu always seemed to know where Bailey was. There was an unspoken bond between them, and seeing the two together was a reminder that love doesn’t have to be spoken to be understood.

For such a big dog, Zuzu believed she was the perfect lap dog. She never cared how much room she took up. If you were sitting down, she assumed your lap belonged to her. She would gently climb up, lean her full weight against you, and settle in as though she weighed only a few pounds. Those moments became some of life’s sweetest memories. She wasn’t just looking for comfort—she wanted to give it. Her cuddles had a way of making even the hardest days feel lighter.

Christmas brought out one of Zuzu’s funniest traditions. Every year, without fail, she claimed the space underneath the Christmas tree as her own. It didn’t matter how many beautifully wrapped presents were stacked beneath it. One by one, she would push them aside until there was enough room for herself. That was her spot, and everyone in the family knew it. Seeing her curled up beneath the glowing lights became as much a part of Christmas as stockings, ornaments, and holiday meals. It simply didn’t feel like Christmas until Zuzu was under the tree.

As the years passed, Zuzu filled our lives with loyalty, laughter, and unconditional love. She celebrated our happiest moments and quietly comforted us through difficult ones. Like all dogs, she asked for very little—just love, attention, and a place close to the people she adored.

When Zuzu became seriously ill, our hearts broke long before we had to say goodbye. Watching someone you love struggle is one of life’s greatest pains, and eventually we had to make the most compassionate decision we could. Choosing to let her go peacefully was the hardest act of love we have ever given. While it ended her suffering, it left an emptiness in our home that words cannot fully describe.

Losing Zuzu meant losing a beloved member of our family, but it also meant watching Bailey lose the sister she had known every day of her life. That heartbreak was almost as difficult as our own. The house felt quieter, the Christmas tree would never look the same, and there was an empty place where a gentle giant used to curl up.

Though Zuzu is no longer beside us, her memory lives on in every Christmas ornament, every quiet cuddle remembered, every laugh about “La Vaca,” and every story we tell about the loving dog who believed every lap was made just for her. She may have crossed the Rainbow Bridge, but the love she gave will remain with us forever.
